One Swing at a Time

As the school year has gotten off to an unpredicted start, the Columbus High School Boys Tennis Team pushed through and began their season strong.

The Boys started off the season by winning two different duals. One was against Grand Island and the other was against Elkhorn. In both duals, the Boys won 9-0.

At most High School Tennis competitions, the six Varsity Guys each play an individual match followed by a doubles match. The opposing team will also play one of each to prevent any unfair advantage from either one of the teams.

On Saturday, September 5th, the Columbus Boys Varsity Tennis Team (Seniors Colin Flyr, Alex Larson, Landen Hastreiter, and Scotus Central Catholic’s Sophomores Bohden Jedlicka, Ted Fehringer, and Scotus Freshmen Frank Fehringer) were up bright and early to host the home invite against Norfolk, Lexington, Hastings, Northeast, and Holdrege. Columbus barely avoided a last-place finish, taking 5th place with rival Norfolk winning the competition.

“We should have placed 3rd and beat a few more teams.” Head Coach Bethune explained during an interview. “The Boys did not play to their potential.” Though this was not their best competition, Coach Bethune has several goals as to how they can improve for this season. As the top priority, Bethune would like the team to complete a safe season even with the Corona Virus still going around. In addition, Coach Bethune would like to improve beyond how the team finished from the previous year. “We have three returning Senior State Qualifiers - Alex Larson, Colin Flyr, and Landen Hastreiter. These guys know what to expect at the high-level competition...We also have several new underclassmen who are to gain experience as the season goes on.” Each of the boys are working hard to overcome the obstacles from this season.

No one expected the school year to happen like this, but the Boys Tennis Team is making the most of what they are able to do. As their season continues to go on, the Varsity team is preparing for upcoming games against Millard North on September 17 and against Papillion-La Vista on September 21. On the other hand, the Boys JV team is preparing for an upcoming invite at Hastings on September 19 along with a home dual against Norfolk on September 24.

I am a returning staffer and extremely excited for this year! Other than Newspaper, I am involved in Cross Country, Marching Band, Swim team,  and National Honor Society. Outside of school,  I am a member of Girl Scouts, Venture Scouts, and participate in my local Youth Group. I also enjoy traveling to go spend time with my family. If  I could travel anywhere in the world I would go to Paris, France.
