Discoverer JV/Reserve/Frosh Fall Sports Update

Discoverer JV and Reserve sports are off to a great start despite the ongoing uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic.

The JV and Reserve softball teams are off to an amazing start. Under the coaching of Ashlee Lueders and Kelsey Skinner, the Discoverers have had some dominant wins. On September 1, the JV Discoverers had an impressive 15-0 win over the Lincoln High Lincs. Contributing to this win with two doubles was freshman Hannah Dahlke and sophomore Abby Wurdeman.

The Reserve squad is also off to a strong start having performed well against every school they have competed. These include a win against Lincoln High and very hard fought games against Lincoln North Star and Lincoln Southwest.

JV Tennis under the direction of Scott Bethune has taken off as well. On September 3, the JV tennis players hosted their first dual against Elkhorn. The Discoverers won four out of six singles matches including wins by Carter Goc, Blake Wemhoff, Alex Zoucha, and Nick Zoucha. All three doubles matches were also swept by the talented group of Discoverers.

The Discoverers golf team has also successfully teed off their season.  In a recent JV invite on August 27th at the Elks Club, the Discoverers, under the coaching of Anne Robertson started off strong. The JV squad consisting of Mallory Comley, Sydney Fleeman, Elly Scheel, and Anna Massman scored a combined 271 points. Although this was a strong score, it was unfortunately beaten by the Scotus and Lakeview JV, with scores of 262 and 209 respectively.  The reserve golf team consisting of Ava Braithwait, Reagan Frerichs, Izy Jones, Elizabeth Mowrey and Ella Shelvin also competed at this meet and all performed very well with scores of 81, 61, 65, 59, and 83 respectively.

The Cross Country squad have started running into the season. The JV Cross Country team competed in their first meet on Friday, September 4th at Boone Central. In third out of the girl runners was Gabby Leija who finished 24th overall with a time of 23 minutes and 35 seconds.

For the boys, Noah Lawrence’s time of 16:41 was fast enough to beat all but one other runner out of a field of over six score runners. Not far behind was senior Discoverer Joseph McFarland who finished with a time of 16:47 and placed 3rd overall at the meet. The third fastest runner at this event was Brandon Urkoski with a placement of 14th overall and a time of 17 minutes and 53 seconds.

Discoverer football is also going strong into the new school year. The JV footballers under the coaching of Alex Liston have gotten off to a slower start then wanted with a record of 0-2. However, Mr. Liston says this record can be improved by effort and execution. The JV hopes to improve their record against Seward, Lakeview, and Norkfolk.

The freshman football season has officially kicked off under the tutelage of first year head coach Ryan Baker. On September 3, the Discoverers beat the Lincoln Northeast Rockets 20-12. This win included two touchdown passes from quarterback Braylon Vancura, who went 6 of 7 passing for 135 yards. Other scoring moments included a Darren Pelowski 32 yard touchdown run , and also a Tanner Esch 37 yard touchdown run. The Freshman Discoverers look forward and are hopeful for future wins against Fremont, Lincoln High, and Grand Island Northwest in the coming weeks.

Finally, Discoverer volleyball teams have started and are acing the season so far. JV Volleyball under the coaching expertise of Joe Held has started off the season with an impressive 4-2 record.
