Wrestling season begins with fall to Grand Island

On Thursday Nov. 29, the Columbus wrestlers traveled to Grand Island Senior High. They lost the dual 30-31. Even though Columbus won the majority of the matches, they were very close scoring, so it was difficult to get a good lead overall.

Grand Island’s No. 4 Aidan Williams beat No. 5 Avery McMeekin in a 6-4 battle. Then, Columbus’s No. 6 Blayze Standley defeated No. 5 Alexziah Deras 5-1, and No. 1 Carson Zwingman pinned his opponent for a 9-3 lead. Anthony DeAnda, No. 2 at 195, won his match 3-2, and Kasten Grape pinned his opponent in the first period at 220. This gave Columbus an 18-3 lead.

Grand Island then got 6 wins in a row, putting Columbus down 31-18. Cade Fullner, Alex Korte, and Carter Kucera managed to get the final score back up to 31-30, just short of a win.

The dual could have ended differently with a few minor changes. The Discoverers still did really well, and they have so much potential for a great season!
