Sunday Sept. 23 at the Lakeview High School track was a day to remember. This was the fifth year that the Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation has held this event to raise money for Childhood Cancer Research.
The Company and Troupe dance groups from Barb’s School of Dance performed in honor of Trevor Luckey, a member of the studio who was diagnosed with Leukemia in February of 2018. Trevor Luckey is a sophomore at Columbus High. He is currently fighting Leukemia at Children's Hospital in Omaha.
Revolution is a group through the Center for Survivors from all three local high schools in Columbus that spreads awareness for teen dating violence and sexual assault. Columbus High Senior Paige Jefferys face paints with the group at the event.
The choirs from all three local high schools sang at the event as well. They continued their tradition in singing “Clouds” by Zach Sobiech, a man who died from Osteosarcoma in 2013.
The keynote Speaker at the event was Kyle Anderson, a Columbus High alumnus. He shared his journey of fighting cancer with everyone present at the event. Kyle was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, or bone cancer, in his left knee on November 7, 2011. Since then, he has undergone eleven surgeries and countless rounds of chemo. He has participated in two clinical trials. His last round of chemotherapy was in April of 2017 and he has been cancer free since thanks to childhood cancer research. Kyle is currently a sophomore at the University of Nebraska Kearney with a pre-medicine major.
I would personally like to thank everyone who came to the event and helped this event take place. The Sammy’s Superheroes foundation is a great organization that is continually growing and doing great things.
