Columbus’s cross team is ready to start running into their busiest part of their season.
Coach Smith stated that some of their highlights from the season so far included winning the Boone meet for the boys team and placing third with the girls team. This was especially impressive considering the hardships of that day’s competition. Smith said the day in Boone was, “extremely hot,” but that “our kids powered through for 10 medals on the day.”
After the victory at Boone, the team was set to gear up for meets against Fremont and Norfolk. These meets excite Smith for a couple of reasons. Smith says that “These two meets will be against the best competition in the state, so we can start to see how we match up.” Not only that, but, “We will be running a flat course, so I am looking forward to seeing how we improve our times.”
The times in Fremont did drop, especially for senior Noah Lawrence.
Lawrence explained, “Our performances at these meets can dictate our district seeding, especially in Fremont…This was a meet our team needed to go out and run some fast times to help get a good district seeding, which we did.”
With the Norfolk meet on the horizon, Lawrence is prepared for the additional challenges.
“Norfolk is a harder course, so we might not have the fastest times, but after Fremont, our morale is high so anything can happen.”
The Discoverer JV and Varsity squads will travel to Norfolk this Friday and will run at 5:00. Being as this event is the closest of any sporting contest in which Columbus will participate Friday night, the team would love it if everybody took the drive to Norfolk to watch them compete.
