She Said, She said: Which Grinch Movie is Better?

The Jim Carrey Grinch is Da Best- No Questions Asked

The masterpiece that is Universal Pictures' “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (the Jim Carrey edition, of course) is by far the best holiday movie ever created. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. When it’s all said and done, the trials, tribulations and a masterclass in acting by Jim Carrey make this movie the superior holiday flick.

While the cost of a movie isn’t always an indicator of the movie’s quality, this one cost A LOT of money. The expenses for this production were well over $120 million, but it was well worth it. The practical effects, costuming, and makeup seen in nearly every shot of this film make viewing an absolute bounty for the eyes. Tremendous amounts of effort had to be put into the smallest details. Over 250 outfits were hand-knitted and over 152,000 pounds of marble was crushed to create the winter wonderland. To make the overall atmosphere come together, they had to use many visual effects; these effects took up about 40 minutes of the final production. Of course, there would be no Grinch without the incredible makeup crew, taking over 1,000 total hours to apply makeup and prosthetics throughout production. “The Grinch” takes the cake for being the #1 production that used the most makeup, replacing the “Wizard of Oz.”

Aside from the tremendous cost to produce this triumph of cinema, it's no doubt Jim Carrey is an acting genius - so much so, most of his lines were conjured up on the spot. He was given creative freedom many times throughout the filming of the movie. This is usually uncharted territory for most directors, and very difficult to pull off for general audiences. With that being said, Carrey’s outstanding reputation allowed for the entire production crew to put their trust in him. He succeeded every time, giving us the most iconic holiday phrases we say on repeat today.

In conclusion, if you haven’t seen “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” Jim Carrey version, then you don’t know true Christmas magic. This holiday season, be sure to watch this comedic rollercoaster with your nearest and dearest.

If, for whatever reason, you have not seen the lot, check out Steph's article on the original animated "Grinch" movie below!

---

The classic animated “Grinch'' is the best movie out there for Christmas - and not the “Jim Carrey” version.

The reason why it’s better than the Jim Carrey version is because it is the original. Without the originals, there would be no versions of the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” or the computer-animated “The Grinch.” More older members of your family will remember watching back in the day, allowing for the creation of fond memories for generations to come!

Another reason why the classic is ten times better is because the film is shorter. It is literally twenty-six minutes long. So if you have plans going on but you really want to watch a Christmas movie, then this is the film for you!  In the time it takes to cook a Digiorno pizza, you can cross a Christmas classic off your holiday watch list.  Does it get any better than that?

It does! Now onto the music! The background music for this movie sounds amazing! The melody goes exactly as the film is going and is perfectly in tune with what is going on in the movie as it plays. Throughout the original film, every action the film has always goes with the beats.  The song “You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch” has been a favorite of all for a long time. To this day, almost everyone loves the music!

Now, you might think that technical marvels of the “JIM CARREY” version  (ew) make this movie a sight to behold, but the simple fact is that those “technical marvels” you speak of scare so many people! Including children! For example, the makeup they use is terrifying. These people have made the Grinch so scary that it looks like a demon! The original film has made the Grinch look campy and fun! He doesn’t scare anyone, unlike that other Grinch movie.

Overall, if you haven’t watched the original film, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” yet, go watch it right now! I promise it is not a waste of time! Happy early Merry Christmas and be careful to not let the Grinch steal your presents!
