CHS Soccer off to a great start

The Columbus girls soccer team is kicking off into a new season! Due to COVID, the girls were not allowed to have a 2020 season last year. Luckily, the girls are finally kicking back into things and excited for the opportunity to practice and have games for their 2021 season.

Coach Wayman, the first-year coach of this year’s squad mentioned, “COVID has made it a little more difficult, just making sure that we are doing everything to stay safe but still get what we want done in practice.”

In the first two weeks of the young season, the soccer team has had a few competitions. Columbus played two weekends ago, going 1-1 with a loss to the Gretna Hawks, but gaining a win over in-city rival Columbus Lakeview.

Columbus High’s third game was played on Monday, March 22nd at Grand Island High School, where the girls took home a win.  Starting for the Discoverers were  Jordyn Trotta (9), Kelyn Garrelts (10), Molly Roberts (12), Emma Zwingman (11), Alyssa Zqingman (11), Ellie Thompson (10), Joey Long (10), Alexis Haynes (12), Addison Kudron (11), Maddie Uhlig (12), and Maddison Jenny (12). The girls played to a competitive, yet decisive 3-0 win against the Tigers. Goals came from Joey Long, Maddie Uhlig, and Addison Kudron with assists by Alexis Haynes, Ellie Thompson, and Madison Jenny respectively.

Coach Wayman said, “there weren’t any struggles; we had 65% of possession and controlled the entire game.” He also included “the girls have improved so much from our first game to our last game at Grand Island.” Their goal for the season is to make it to state, compete in a district final, and finish the season with a winning record.

On Friday, March 26th, Columbus took on the Fremont Tigers. The starting lineup that contests Jordyn Trotta (9), Kelyn Garrelts (10), Molly Roberts (12), Emma Zwingman (11), Alyssa Zwingman (11),  Ellie Thompson (10), Joey Long (10), Alexis Haynes (12), Addison Kudron (11), Maddie Uhlig (12), and Maddison Jenny (12). The Discoverers played a very scrappy game but won 4 -0. The first two goals were scored by Maddison Jenny, then one apiece from Addison Kudron and Ellie Thompson. Assists came from Alexis Haynes and Maddie Uhlig respectively.

“Fremont plays an aggressive defensive line so trying to make sure we were not offside was a little bit of an adjustment but our girls responded really well and played great,” Wayman commented. He also remarked, “We played well in controlling the game and being the aggressors, Fremont played a unique style of soccer so being able to adjust and still win in a different way, comfortably was great.”

The girls are starting off with a great season with a record of 3-1. The girls will play next in Kearney against the Bearcats tonight, March 30, at 7:00 pm.
