Project: Polar Cares

The start of the school year is exciting to some, but to others, the added cost of clothing and school supplies causes a financial burden. Unfortunately, this problem affects a number of Northern School District students. District officials hope to alleviate hardships faced by local families in establishing a place to go for help:  The Polar Cares Clothing Closet.

With the help of a start up grant from the Polar Bear Foundation, Northern Administrators set the "closet" up in an empty classroom located in the Sports and Learning Center. Northern families can contact their child's guidance counselor or the school nurse and receive clothing for the entire family. Teachers and administrators of each of the district's schools have been contributing to the closet since this summer, with new items brought into the Administration office all the time.

If you would like to make a donation, green barrels labeled "Project Polar Cares" are in every school lobby and Northern's Administration Office. Items needed range from gently used clothing and coats, to shoes, sneakers, and boots. The future plan is to have other rooms dedicated to not only clothing, but personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies.

As new things come in,  the need to help sort and organize donations rises. Contact Maureen Ross, mross@nycsd.k12.pa.us for more details.

I teach the two broadcasting courses (Broadcast I and Television Production) and serve as adviser to the NHS News show.
