Are you sick of homework, and think it’s a waste of time? Well, there is a lot of reasons why homework should be banned in schools. It can cause depression and anxiety, sleep deprivation, unhealthy levels of stress, and family problems. Let’s discuss some of these reasons further.
A Galloway study indicated that students that had three hours or more of homework per night and experienced signs of depression and anxiety. Also, Emmy Kang, a mental health counselor at Humantold, says that heavy workloads can be “detrimental” for students and cause a “big impact” on their mental, physical, and emotional health.” I know from experience that having a heavy workload limits time with my family, and I find myself secluded in my room for hours on end completing homework.
There have been many studies and surveys of students on whether they feel they get enough sleep. In a recent survey, 57% of students feel that they do not get enough sleep, and 79% percent reported that they get less than 7 hours of sleep due to spending time on homework. Based on Better Sleep Council’s (BSC) findings, the more stressed teenagers feel, the more likely they are to go to bed later and wake up earlier. This doesn’t include students who are involved in extracurricular activities and don’t get to their homework done until late in the evening. Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Better Sleep Council, Mary Helen Rogers, claims, “We’re finding that teenagers are experiencing this cycle where they sacrifice their sleep to spend extra time on homework, which gives the more stress – but they don’t get better grades.”
I spoke about the stress, anxiety, and even depression homework can cause many students, but the students aren’t the only ones impacted by homework. For many families, the daily struggle of getting homework done while trying to juggle work life and extracurricular activities can stress families out. It causes many to wonder if homework is actually necessary. In my personal experience, my parents have often helped me with my math homework. Many times, helping with homework would lead to frustration on both of our parts, as the process from when my parents were in school to how I was being taught was very different. Homework causing stress for the students and families is a very real reality.
Students have to deal with being in school for eight hours, so expecting then to go home and work on homework can become very overwhelming. I know that when I get home from school I like to take time and relax. Oher students enjoy extracurricular activities, or hobbies after school, but many can’t because they simply have too much homework. My solution? Homework should be banned.
