The Life of Roger Federer

Whenever someone mentions the sport tennis, the first name that comes to mind for most is Roger Federer. Federer has done many things other than being a tennis player. Most know him as the best tennis player to live with his 18 grand slam titles, but how did this all come together?

Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981 in Basel, Switzerland, to Robert Federer and Lynette Du Rand. By age 14, Federer had already become the national junior champion of Switzerland and then by the age of 17, he turned pro. His first shot of fame came during Wimbledon in 2001 when he beat the reigning singles champion, Pete Sampras in the fourth round. He then won the tournament in 2003 becoming the first Swiss man ever to win it. He then went on to win the tournament six more times. Through the next couple of years, he remained the position of number one for 302 weeks, which is the most among any tennis player.

In 2003, Roger Federer established the Roger Federer Foundation, which gives grants to countries with a child mortality rate higher than 15%. Recently, Roger traveled to Malawi and helped provide 50 preschools to the country. As well as building preschools, Roger helped serve and make lunch for the preschoolers. In all, the Roger Federer Foundation has donation more than 13 million dollars to countries like this.

Roger Federer got married in 2009 to former professional tennis player, Mirka Vavrinec. Then in July 2009, they had their first pair of twins, Myla and Charlene. Then in 2014, they had their second pair of twins, Leo and Lenny. They now live in Bottmingen, Switzerland.

This year he won the Australian Open against his rival, Rafael Nadal. This historic tournament resulted in two 35-year-olds to win both the Women’s and Men’s Singles (Serena Williams and Roger Federer). Roger’s ranking shot back up into the top ten after the win and now is facing the year with rejuvenated energy after the historical win.

I am in 10th grade and love to play soccer and tennis.
