Christmas in North America

Canada

Canadians are firm believers that their nation is the home of Santa Claus. In fact, they hold the oldest and largest Santa Claus Parade in the world. The Santa Claus Parade started in 1913 in Toronto, Canada. More than 25 animated floats and over 2,000 people are seen in the parade and is broadcasted on TV every year.

During the festive holiday season, the Sinck Tuck festival is celebrated in some provinces of the country. This festival originated from the indigenous people of Canada known as the Inuit. Dancing and gift exchanging are traditionally involved with the celebration.

Mexico

Christmas in Mexico begins tradition in early December through early January. Mexicans first start with the nine festival days of Las Posadas which translates to the inn or shelter. Often children perform the reenactment of the the Bible story of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and their search for a place to stay.

The nine days of Las Posadas begins with religious services such as prayer and reading the Bible. After the services, Mexicans eat tamales and drinks such as ponche or atole. Las Posadas were originally held only in churches but Mexican families now celebrate the holiday in their homes with family and friends in their community.
