Should Gaming Be Considered a Sport?

We all grow up with something that interests us, something we love to do, something we’re good at.  A special talent of sorts. This can vary from art to music to hobbies to sports. However, how do we know where to draw the line between some of these activities. What is considered a sport and what is considered a hobby?

Many children grow up with a love of video games. It allows their mind to wander and helps them stop thinking of problems they could be having in their lives. This also occurs with those who play football or basketball. Yes, video games may not involve the same amount of physical activity as football does, but does golf? Video games like any other sport requires a great amount of skill as well as strategy. The players require a great reaction time, dedication, and the same amount of mental focus a quarterback would need. Any sport requires practice. People play video games everyday learning new skills and studying techniques, similar to a basketball player learning new drills.

A sport is defined as an activity involving skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Within eSports you are able to participate as teams or as individuals, while there is a huge fanbase to support these athletes and enjoy their entertainment. Just as there are thousands of fans recognizing their favorite players on a basketball team, there are thousands also recognizing their favorite gamers.

We all know that these professional basketball players and football players earn millions of dollars for what they do. However did you also know that these professional gamers earn millions as well? So, if these gamers are practicing just as much, getting paid just as much, and holding a similarly large fanbase, then why shouldn’t gaming be considered a sport? Many answer this question saying, "Because it requires no physical activity."  However, we have the popular sports of golf and bowling. Video games require some of the same needs as football or any other definitive sport, so we should definitively consider gaming a sport.

I was born September 21, 1999 in Columbus, Ohio. I have three brothers and growing up with my older brother led me to adopt his love for sports. I saw sports as my opening to have more conversations with my brothers and my father. I never took school seriously until entering my freshmen year of High school  where I realized high school is a pathway to bigger and better things for the future. After high school I plan on attending a four year university to start off my career in becoming a journalist.
