Established by the HERO Campaign, the annual HERO Walk promotes the use of designated drivers. The HERO Campaign was created in memory of Ensign John R. Elliott, who was killed by a drunk driver on July 22, 2000. He is an alumnus of Egg Harbor Township High School Class of 1996, and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and he was named "HERO" of the Class of 2000.
