Interview with Mr. Tangney

Mr. Tangney is one of two new assistant principals for Newfield High School, and despite only starting a few short weeks ago, he has made a positive impact on students and staff alike.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Tangney, and it was evident from the start of the meeting that all of the positive things I have been hearing about him since the beginning of the year were true.

Mr. Tangney worked as an Earth Science teacher at Valley Stream Central School District before becoming an administrator at Newfield. Science education wasn’t only a job for him -- it was also a hobby. His history as an Earth Science teacher did not disappear, however, as it is evident by the unique rocks and minerals that line his desk – including one impressive piece that has a miniature Excalibur stuck in it. He further embraces this love of the Earth by participating in several outdoor recreational activities, including kayaking.

His interest in science is not isolated to Earth Science, however, as he enjoys the Cognitive Studies and robotics -- he is a big fan of Battlebots and is excited to be an administrator in a school with a rapidly growing interest in STEM and robotics. Mr. Tangney, unsurprisingly due to his love of science, also enjoys Big Bang Theory and will be tuning into Young Sheldon in a few weeks time.

Mr. Tangney has been enjoying his experience at Newfield immensely thus far, as “the students and faculty have been extremely welcoming.” He is very excited for the upcoming year, and is particularly excited to see the Homecoming Parade as he has heard many great things about Newfield’s Class skits – all of our classes will have to work hard to make a good impression this year, as they always do!

Mr. Tangney is a fantastic addition to the administrative team, and he is looking forward to getting to know the student body, as well as, encouraging a positive educational environment.

Author’s Note: Mr. Tangney is the assistant principal for Grade 9 (K-Z) and Grade 10. His office is located on the second floor in the math hallway and is marked with a red door. Consider reading Sydney Taub’s article on Ms. Carella-Dean, as she is the other new assistant principal for Newfield and is principal for Grade 9 (A-L) and Grade 11. Newfield High School is lucky to have two amazing new administrators, who are looking to make your time at Newfield as pleasurable as possible. So, stop by and say hello!

Editor's Note: We will be doing a follow up with Mr. Tangney in a few weeks time about Young Sheldon as part of the Newsfield review of it -- stay tuned!
