Collaborating Separately: To Kill a Mockingbird Performed From “Isolation”

I have always been astounded by my students’ resourcefulness and creativity. And now that we are all learning from a distance (way more than six feet), I am discovering even more about this next generation of people who will lead us into the future. Way too often, I hear a lot about how these kids can’t do this and can’t do that. Newsflash world. They are awesome, adaptable, creative problem-solvers, and capable of bringing our crazy world forward.

Here is the challenge I proposed. We were going to perform the iconic Trial Scene from To Kill a Mockingbird onstage in the high school auditorium. We had talked about this since September. But Pandemic interceded.  So I pitched it out. How can we do this?  They figured it out. And here is a small sample of my students’ profound capabilities.

I'm in my 38th year of teaching, 37 of them in Mineola.  I teach 8th and 11th grade English at the high school, and I am the adviser for the Question Mark, the high school newspaper.  I also am assistant director for the spring musical and the adviser for the Creative Writing Club.
