Ephrata AM 2-19-20

Good Morning Ephrata NAMES today is Tuesday Feb 18, Please rise for a moment of silence and the pledge to the flag.

This week, we are celebrating National FFA week. FFA is an intracurricular organization for students interested in agricultural careers. Although many people incorrectly call it “Future Farmers of America,” you don’t necessarily have to want to be a farmer to be part of the group. Many students in the organization are interested in careers like entomology, veterinary science, wildlife biology, microbiology, food science, ag business, landscaping, welding, or mechanics.

Now for our Ag trivia of the day: The Keystone State ranks first nationally in mushroom production – farmers annually produce more than 570 million pounds of mushrooms.

As part of our celebration, we are asking everyone to join us for ONE dress down day TOMORROW. Please wear the FFA colors: blue and gold!

And now for a video from the senior class officers

The final chance to order a yearbook with your name added on the front cover is today, Tuesday Feb 18. Go to jostensyearbooks.com or look at the Schoology post from Mr. Bischoff to print out the form.

"In today’s news, Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, has pledged to spend $10 billion to fight climate change. He said in an Instagram post that he’d give grants to scientists, activists and non-profit organizations in an effort to, “fight the devastating impact of climate change”. Interestingly enough, this announcement has come soon after Amazon’s enormous carbon footprint was revealed to the public.

On this day in history in 1885, Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published. The book came as a sequel to Adventures of Tom Sawyer, however it was a lot more serious as it focused on the institution of slavery and life in the antebellum South. The book is considered controversial by many, but still regarded by critics as an American masterpiece."

This weekend, several teams represented Ephrata in district level playoffs. The girls basketball team opened the tournament vs Dallastown. Down 17-4 at the end of the first quarter, the Ephrata girls came back strong and eventually traded the lead. Ultimately the girls weren't able to hold on for the win ending with a 43-41 loss. Senior Gabbie Gerola Hill led the Mounts with 20 points on the night and reached the 1000 point milestone with .5 seconds left in the match. Congratulations girls on a great season!

In wrestling action, several Ephrata wrestlers competed in the district matches Kayde Althouse was bested in the semifinal round, but James Ellis proved too strong for any competitors and nabbed the gold at 170lbs.

All three went to the finals but were unable to advance. The team of Alex Bischoff and Ashton Kunkle were presented with the sportsmanship award.
