SIX, the musical written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, is about the six wives of the notorious Henry VIII. It takes the story of his six wives and twists it into a pop sensation. The historical stories are told as though it were a pop concert, with each wife singing her story. Songs like “Ex Wives” and “Don’t Lose Ur Head” anchor the show.
The show received mostly favorable reviews. Catey Sullivan from the Chicago Sun Times wrote, “Amid a powerhouse score and exceptional cast, the history of Henry VIII’s wives doesn’t turn away from trauma, brutality and sorrow, but the six women on stage persist in breaking free nevertheless.” Though musicals are usually upbeat, this story is anything but a “happily ever after”. However, the power of the music and the performances and some humor in the lyrics keeps the audience enthralled.
The studio recording of SIX was released in Fall 2018. Currently, it is running in London, Australia, Chicago, and there is a tour in the UK. It is also coming to Broadway on February 13th at the Brooks Atkinson theatre, where the musical Waitress used to reside.
