NOW OVER TO ____ WITH THE NEWS

NEWS INTRO VIDEO

------------------

Japan's Emperor Akihito has declared his abdication in a historic ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. In his last public address as emperor, Akihito handed over the symbols of power and thanked the public for their support during his 30-year reign. The 85-year-old was given permission to abdicate after saying he felt unable to fulfil his role because of his age and declining health. He is the first Japanese monarch to stand down in more than 200 years. Crown Prince Naruhito will ascend the throne on Wednesday, beginning a new era - called Reiwa - in Japan's unique calendar.

In other news,

Rod Rosenstein, the US deputy attorney general who oversaw the special counsel inquiry into President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia, has resigned. Rosenstein, who had a fraught working relationship with Trump, will step down on 11 May in a departure that had been expected for months. In his letter, he paid tribute to Trump, even praising the president's "courtesy and humour". Trump once tweeted an image showing Rosenstein jailed for treason.

On this day in 1789, George Washington is sworn in as the first American president and delivers the first inaugural speech at Federal Hall in New York City. Elements of the ceremony set tradition; presidential inaugurations have deviated little in the two centuries since Washington’s inauguration.
