Facebook was aware of inaccuracies in the way it measured how many people viewed video on its site for a year longer than it has previously admitted, court documents have claimed. Newly released papers that are part of a US legal action against the social network, claim that it knew about the problems in 2015. Facebook described the case against it as "without merit". It said suggestions it had tried to hide the issue were "false". In September 2016, Facebook admitted that it had overestimated how much video people had watched for the previous two years.

Scientists have unearthed the fossilized remains of a piranha-like species that they say is the earliest known example of a flesh-eating fish. This bony creature, found in South Germany, lived about 150 million years ago and had the distinctive sharp teeth of modern-day piranhas. These Jurassic marauders used their razor teeth to tear chunks of flesh and fins off other fish. Other fish were found nearby which had been attacked by the ancient piranhas.

On this day in 1781, Britain's Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, handing a huge victory to American General George Washington. This effectively ended the American Revolution and assured America's independence.

In 1872- The U.S. Naval Academy admitted John H. Conyers, he was the first African American to be accepted to the Academy.
