The Hate U Give Life Infants F Everyone. Thug Life.
Back in February 2017, author Angie Thomas released her debut novel The Hate U Give. The book lasted over 50 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was met with lots of praise. Now, only under 3 years since its debut, the novel is hitting the big screen.
The story, inspired by multiple real life events, follows a sixteen-year-old girl, Starr Carter, who witnesses a white police officer shoot and kill her unarmed, African-American friend. Starr is forced to be two different people; one being not “too Garden Heights” for her predominantly white private school, Williamson Prep, and the other being not “too Williamson” for her predominantly black town, Garden Heights. In the wake of her friend’s death, Starr struggles with how she wants to advocate and her identity as a whole. The Black Lives Matter movement, drugs, gangs, identity, and media biases are among the topics that are addressed.
The movie stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr Carter, Regina Hall and Russell Hornsby as Starr’s parents, Sabrina Carpenter as Starr’s friend Hailey, and KJ Apa as Starr’s boyfriend Chris. It also features Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, Common. The film opens in theaters everywhere on October 19th, and tickets are available now on www.thehateugive.com.
