Scratchboard Art

Mrs. Sutton's art classes recently finished their scratchboard projects.

Scratchboard is a material where black ink is layered on either a metallic, white, or colored heavy paper (they used a silver scratchboard). Students engraved an image onto the scratchboard with a stylus by scratching away the black ink. Students were assigned to create a composition by combining 3 related images/ objects. Their scratched lines created the silver image for the viewer.

The most successful works demonstrate knowledge and skill, providing the viewer with an image focusing on details, texture, and the form of the objects.

Mrs. Heidenreich is an English teacher at Juniata High School.
