East Juniata Jazz Combo

The East Juniata Jazz Combo is a jazz group consisting of six students and our director, Mr. Milliken. Unlike a big band jazz group, which includes five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, and a rhythm section, a combo only has a rhythm section and a few horns. The members of our combo include Kylie Elsasser on baritone and alto saxophone, Sarah Irvin on tenor and soprano saxophone, Zach Leitzel on trumpet, Margaret Edwards on trombone and vocals, Bryson Kantz on drums, Sam Karper on bass, and Mr. Milliken on piano.

In combo we get to create our own arrangements of classic tunes by jazz legends such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, and Thelonius Monk. We play a wide range of musical styles, from swing to Latin to funk. Our main focus is on improvisation. We learn to interpret melodies, chords, and scales to create our own solos right on the spot. While it takes a lot of work to learn to play these solos, they are one of my favorite art forms. It is so fun to play unique and emotional solos next to great musicians who also happen to be your best friends. Music forms a sense of connection that nothing else I’ve experienced can. I’m very thankful that I got the chance to be a part of this awesome group.
