Influences Drawn from Edna Pontellier

English and Literature have undoubtedly been topics of interest for me, both in school and for leisure, throughout my many years as a student. I have always loved expressing my creativity in the various ways that English has to offer and I have been fond of reading since elementary school. I believe that reading, in particular, is crucial in order to grow as a person and gain more knowledge about life. Whether it is a news article, a comic strip, or a novel, reading provides people with necessary information that influences or inspires them one way or another. For me, I find influences everywhere I look in literature. Specifically, Edna Pontellier, from the novel The Awakening by Kate Chopin, has definitely had the greatest influence on my life so far.

It was only over this past summer that I first picked up a copy of The Awakening to read, and I fell in love. The plot revolves around Edna Pontellier, a wealthy wife and mother living in New Orleans during the late 1800s. On the outside, it appears as though she is living quite comfortably. However, deep down Edna is unsatisfied with the societal roles of mother and wife that she is forced to play. Edna knows that as a woman she has a greater purpose in life, and she slowly challenges the conventions of the time period in order to discover her own identity. Throughout the course of the novel, Edna evolves into a strong, independent woman who does as she pleases. It was not easy for her to rebel against social norms, and her actions further render immense judgment from society. In the end, it was an important obstacle to tackle for her own identity as a woman.

I believe strongly in the power of women and the capabilities that we possess. Edna’s desire to become more in life than just a wife and mother, and the strength that she displayed in the pursuit of her own independence, has influenced me in a profound way. Edna’s character has taught me important lessons of confidence and resilience during times when it would be much easier to back down. I am never afraid to voice my opinion aloud and go after the things that I want. In addition, I have grown to be very independent and proud of the woman that I am today. Going into the male-dominated industry of business, this mentality will come in handy. If people think that I am not cut out for a job just because I am a woman, then I will prove them wrong. I am worth so much more than what society thinks I am worth, and I can do anything that I dream of doing; nobody can stop me and no goal of mine will go unshattered. Moreover, Edna Pontellier is such an inspirational character for me and I try to emanate the strength and independence emitted by her in my everyday life.
