TGI Fry-Day - The Best Fries

So you have a couple of extra dollars in your pocket and extra time after school. The average high schooler would get a snack, but the question is, what kind of snack? Maybe something salty, maybe something crispy, maybe a box of french fries! Now that you’ve decided what you want, a new challenge faces you. Where do you get them? There are tons of different places that sell fries, 4 of them right by Mineola High School.

Our team (Bethany Shatz, Paola Vicini, Jake Chesna, and Ben Stiehl) went to these prominent fry joints, rating all of them so you don’t have to. The Rex, Burger King, P.J’s, and Five Guys are all highly acclaimed fry places by the High School. Each one has its own strengths, but it was time to find out which one was truly the best. We visited each place and began to rate each fry by category.

We rated each different fry on 5 categories: texture, taste, saltiness, size, and service. Each of us gave a score out of five for each category, meaning the best overall score one place would get was 100. Additionally, everybody gave small comments about each place for more of an opinionated rating.  Compiling our scores, The Rex came out on top.

The Rex: 79

Texture 3 3 5 4: 15      Taste 4 4 4 4: 16

Saltiness 5 5 5 5: 20    Size 3 3 3 3: 12

Service 4 4 4 4: 16

“Everything was nice about it, although it was expensive.”

“Out of all of the fries, I liked The Rex the best because they were nice tasting and skinny.”

“The fries were really good and they have a really nice texture.”

“The fries came out pretty fast, and I love how crispy they are.”

The Rex got the best rating, both technical and opinion-based. However, be aware that this place is a bit expensive, with the fries costing just about $5.

P.Js 72

Texture 3 2 2 3 10

Taste 4 4 4 4 16

Saltiness 2 2 2 4 10

Size 5 5 5 5 20

Service 4 4 4 4 16

“The wait was long, but it’s convenient and you get a lot of fries”

“Their texture wasn’t great, although they tasted good”

“The fries were a bit chewy, but we did have them for a bit so that could’ve been the reason”

“The fries were OK, nothing what I expected though.”

P.J’s was a bit of a middle ground for everyone. We have been hearing good about it from a lot

of people, however it wasn’t what we had expected.

Five Guys 74

Texture 4 3 3 3 13

Taste 3 3 4 4 14

Saltiness 3 4 4 4 15

Size 3 3 3 3 12

Service 5 5 5 5 20

“The guy working there was nice, and the fries were good”

“Their fries were O.K, they weren’t the worst but they weren’t the best”

“The service was really good and the fries were good, although they could be a bit salty

sometimes”

“The wait staff was really friendly, and although they were a bit salty they were really good”

Everyone seemed to like Five Guys, but the fries are a bit salty. The man at the counter was

quite friendly however, even giving us a medium when we payed for a small container of fries.

Burger King 29

Texture 3 3 2 3 11

Taste 1 0 1 1 3

Saltiness 1 1 1 1 4

Size 1 1 1 1 4

Service 2 2 1 2 7
