Aziz Ansari is pulling a move that his Parks and Recreation character Tom Haverford could never do. He's giving up the Internet, deleting his social media accounts and phone browser, and even foregoing email. Why on earth is Aziz doing this?
In an interview with GQ magazine, Ansari said, “whenever you check for a new post on Instagram or whenever you go on The New York Times to see if there’s a new thing, it’s not even about the content. It’s just about seeing a new thing. You get addicted to that feeling. The only way to fight that is to take yourself out of the equation and remove all these things.”
Part of the reason for Ansari's Internet blackout is a search for real connection and experiences outside the social media vortex that informs most people's everyday lives. He feels if he is going to continue to write Master of None or other projects, he has to live life outside of the digital bubble.
