Inspirational Writing from Lee Greenwoods "God Bless the USA"

For my English class with Mrs. Shaffer, we listened to several patriotic songs and had to select one that inspired a reflective essay.

A Thank You To Our Veterans

By:  Tyler Castelluci

I just have to say that I can not speak badly about any of these songs, mainly because these all reflect the American spirit in their own way. However the song that stuck out to me the most was God Bless The USA by Lee Greenwood. This song inspired me the most because of it speaks of the pride in being an American and the importance of not forgetting our veterans.

I know from personal experience that I do not forget the veterans of this country. I am a proud American because of the actions of my grandfathers, uncles, and cousins and what they have gone through for this country's freedom.  I personally think that in today’s society we can all learn something from this song, whether it is taking pride in our country, helping others, or simply thanking a veteran for his or her service.  I do not think that we thank the veterans enough, and no one is more deserving of thanks than the men and women who sacrifice everything for our country.

The line “I’m proud to be an American.” makes me think of all of us who, at times, take being an American for granted. If we would only stop and reflect upon this words every so often, we would realize all of the blessings that our military men and women made possible for us.

Another line that struck a chord with me is “ who gave that right to me.” This line means a lot because our veterans literally go through  hell and high water to get us our freedom and our rights, and yet,  there are  people who take those rights too far. For example, people take our right of freedom of press, speech, and assembly too far; at times, the press, is not always careful of what it reports and sometimes reports what it thinks people want to hear.  As far as speech and assembly are concerned,  we can go and protest peacefully,  but when it turns violent and people say,  “That’s our right to do so.”  I say, “ No it is not!”  My grandfathers, uncles, and cousins did not fight for this country so people can use the “it is my right” excuse, anytime they feel like it, which in turn, disrespects others’ rights.

I think Lee Greenwood did a brilliant job in honoring the points that our rights are not free; they were paid for by the men and women of the past, today, and tomorrow. Every veteran should be thanked because without them where would we be?  Where would the world be?  I for one never want to know the answer to those questions.  So THANK you veterans for ALL that you do!
