Happy Fourth of July!

Find your favorite pair of shorts, throw on a red, white and blue t-shirt, and fire up the barbecue because it’s time to sing happy birthday to America once again.  This year marks the 241st anniversary of the adoption of The Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress in 1776.

The Congressional vote on whether to declare war actually took place on July 2nd, although The Declaration itself wasn’t approved until July 4th. Seems “The Second of July” just doesn’t have the same pizzazz to it. The Declaration was sent directly to England’s King George III who, unsurprisingly, didn’t take too kindly to his colony’s rebellion. Once war broke out, the Americans were able to defeat the British forces despite their lop-sided advantage in training, experience and resources.

Since then, the 4th of July has been a day of pride, reflection and patriotism, as we pay homage to the brave souls who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom. In the midst of celebratory cookouts, firework shows, and enjoying a day off, make an effort to remember those who paid the ultimate price to give us the lives we have today. It’s important to remember the spirit of Independence Day and the unifying power it possesses.
