Humpbacks in the Hudson

Whale sightings are becoming increasingly common in New York City of all places, with more than 30 whale sightings since 2016. Gotham Whale, a New York-based marine tracking group, estimates that 50 whales have been spotted in the city since 2011.

The reason for the uptick in sightings seems to point to an increase in the local population of menhaden, a prime food source of humpbacks, thanks to clean-up projects and fishing caps in and around New York state. Whatever the reason, we are happy to share the waters of New York with such majestic creatures.
