Crayola Dumps Dandelion on National Crayon Day

Crayon pioneers Crayola have announced plans to retire their classic color Dandelion yellow, a trademark hue that currently appears in every size box of their product. Though Dandelion’s replacement has not yet been revealed, Crayola Senior Vice President of Global Marketing Melanie Boulden recently hinted, “the new color will be part of the blue family, and this summer we are going to invoke our fans to name the new color because we want you all to be a part of Crayola history.” This is not the first time the 114-year-old crayon king has retired and replaced a color. In 1990, Crayola retired eight of its signature crayon colors, placed them in its “Crayola Hall of Fame,” and rolled out eight new shades, one of which was Dandelion. In 2003, during the company’s centennial celebration, four more were sent to the hall: teal blue, blizzard blue, magic mint and mulberry. A grand total of 120 different crayon colors are currently produced by Crayola.
