We Dine Together: No One Eats Lunch Alone

WE DINE TOGETHER SAVES SEATS FOR ALL

Though lunch period provides a refreshing break from school day monotony, feeling like you have no one to sit with can make that half hour feel agonizingly long. Having spent years growing familiar with the feeling, Boca Raton Community High School student Denis Estimon decided to form “We Dine Together,” a club that unites isolated students at lunch. In first grade, Estimon immigrated from Haiti to Boca Raton, where he immediately felt out of place and lonely, especially at lunch. Estimon is now a senior with plenty of friends, but he hasn’t forgotten the experience. “It’s not a good feeling, like you’re by yourself. And that’s something that I don’t want anybody to go through,” Estimon says. “To me it’s like, if we don’t try to go make that change, who’s going to do it?” “We Dine Together” also hosts an after-school meeting for members to discuss relationships and friendship frustrations. Of the club, Estimon says, “at the end of each meeting I tell them, ‘Look, you guys have to go out there and try to make relationships.’ I myself, at lunch, every single day I walk around, I look for kids, I shake their hand.”
