Learn About International Women's Day

International Women’s Day is a celebration of the flourishing modern feminist movement, and thousands of women throughout the US and abroad are expected to stage job strikes and restrain from commerce as a demonstration of their vital role in society. Originally called International Working Women’s Day, the observance began as a labor protest in 1909 in New York City, and his since grown into an annual, UN-recognized event. In addition to being a celebration of women’s rights, organizers have declared the day as a mission to promote overall civil awareness and anti-discrimination campaigns.
