TAP, TAPP?

President Donald Trump has accused former President Barack Obama of ordering illegal wiretapping of phones in Trump Tower late last year, yet has cited no evidence supporting his claims. In a Saturday morning tweet, Trump wrote, “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” Hours later, he tweeted again, “How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!” A spokesman for President Obama later replied the claims were “simply false.” Trump’s allegations come as criticism builds regarding his team’s ties to Russian intelligence agents and state department figures. Last year, US intelligence departments uncovered evidence that Russian hackers leaked emails from Democratic National Committee figures as part of an effort to discredit Hillary Clinton, and possibly aid Trump’s election efforts.

EMMA WATSON DEFENDS FEMINISM

Beauty and the Beast star Emma Watson has come under fire for a photo released by Vanity Fair as part of a recent cover story interview. The shot, which shows the actress topless save for a cape over her shoulders, resulted in instant criticism from a number media outlets, including prominent Hollywood Reporter and Billboard media outlet Pret-a-Reporter, who immediately headlined, “Is actress and feminist Emma Watson a hypocrite for going topless in Vanity Fair?” In late February, Watson spoke with Entertainment Weekly about public misconception of feminism, explaining, “this isn’t just girls are better than boys, boys are better than girls. This is just everyone deserves a fair chance…gender equality, across the board.” Regarding the term itself, Watson said, “I think the word is really difficult because it seems to inherently address a preferential treatment of the feminine over the masculine…that’s a real oversight and misunderstanding.”

NORTH KOREAN CYBERWAR

Though most recent headlines regarding North Korean military actions have involved their numerous ballistic missile tests, another story has been lurking beneath—that of a three-year-old electronic war against the country’s missile program, initiated by President Obama. The cyber sabotage campaign initially seemed to be a success, as North Korean missile tests during the Obama years began to misfire or combust shortly after launch. However, some US experts became skeptical of the cyber sabotage campaign, claiming that manufacturing problems or incompetent military operators also could have caused the misfires. Recent interviews with members of both presidents’ administrations have fueled this skepticism, as many have indicated the US still does not possess the capacity to effectively disrupt Jong-Un’s missile and nuclear programs. The New York Times found that Obama warned Trump that this issue was “likely to be the most urgent problem he would confront.”
