BOMBOGENESIS HITS CALIFORNIA
The state of California is currently experiencing what could become its strongest storm in decades, a weather pattern experts call Bombogenesis, or “weather bomb”. As of Sunday, hundreds of homes in the Los Angeles area had been evacuated due to mudslide risks, power loss had struck over 150,000 residences, and sinkholes in major roads had swallowed dozens of cars. By Monday morning, five deaths were been confirmed. The storm is now said to be easing in Southern California and heading north towards the San Francisco area. Further north lies Oroville Dam, the nation’s tallest water retention and reservoir structure; due to flooding risks at Oroville, over 180,000 nearby residents have been evacuated. Forecast analytics group WeatherBell is currently reporting that up to 10 trillion gallons of rain will fall across the state throughout the next week. The storm is described by WeatherBell as an intense “extra-tropical cyclonic low-pressure” area.

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED IN SWEDEN?
While defending his travel ban during a Saturday campaign rally in Florida, President Trump made mention of a recent terrorist incident in Sweden, which news agencies around the globe and Swedish residents immediately denied ever took place. Verbatim, Trump commented, “when you look at what’s happening in Germany, when you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden—Sweden! Who would believe this? Sweden! They took in large numbers; they’re having problems like they never thought possible.” The next morning, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt responded, tweeting, "Sweden? Terror attack? What has he been smoking? Questions abound." Trump’s mention of a non-existent terrorist attack comes shortly after White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, during a national television interview, referred to a separate “terror attack” that never happened, this one a domestic incident dubbed the “Bowling Green Massacre”.

SPACEX LAUNCH SUCCESSFUL
At the historic Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Billionaire technologist Elon Musk’s embattled SpaceX rocket firm has successfully fired a cargo vessel towards the International Space Station. Less than 10 minutes after launch, the cargo vessel, dubbed the SpaceX Dragon, entered into orbit without incident, and its rocket safely returned to Earth’s surface. This surface landing is a part of Musk’s rocket recovery strategy, one not typically utilized during space missions; agencies such as NASA traditionally take a one-and-done approach, allowing propulsion units to fall into the sea after successful launches. SpaceX’s plan to reuse its rockets is a cost-saving, enviro-friendly component of the private engineering firm’s goal of redesigning the space exploration process. This launch is the company’s second straight successful mission after a 2016 launch pad explosion threatened to derail the SpaceX program’s development.
