Winter Concert

On Wednesday December 14 the Shanksville-Stonycreek Middle and High School Chorus and Band showed off their talent at their annual Winter Concert in the school cafetorium.

The winter concert is a combined event between the Shanksville Chorus and Band members in middle and high school that’s held every year before Christmas break. Students are able to perform musical selections they have practiced, since the beginning of the school year. The music they perform is primarily Christmas related or winter themed.

This year, the band began the program with several selections. Three songs were performed by band students in grades 4 thru 12, giving the younger students time in the spotlight. Several musical numbers included middle school students mixed in among the high school students in a group called wind ensemble.

“We all played well together. Elementary, middle, and high school blended well for the pieces we played together. It was fun kinda taking the younger players under my wing and helping them when they needed,” said Senior Robert Fidler

The high school band concluded the band part of the concert with a selection that was much different than any of the other pieces played. They played the song, Carol of the Bells. These experienced players performed the Trans-Siberian Orchestra arrangement of the holiday piece.

With the help of light and sound manager Mr. Marty Petrosky, the stage was transformed into a dramatic light show, much like a concert setting of a Trans-Siberian performance. This enhanced the intensity of the music the band students were playing.

After the band was finished performing their selections, it was time for the Shanksville Chorus to perform. This section commenced with the middle school chorus. These students performed many different Christmas songs, and one of which included students playing guitars.

Since the Shanksville Music Department was given a grant for several guitars many years ago, Choral Director Mrs. Cheryl Bush takes advantage of any situations where these guitars can be used. Four students from the middle school choir played along with their guitars as the rest of their group sang a beautiful number. The title of the song the Middle School Choir performed was “Silent Night.”

After middle school finished their performance, it was time for the next part of the concert to take place. The five high school ensemble members performed two selections. “Sing Noel” was one of their pieces, and was accompanied by a flute player, a drum player, tambourine and triangle, played by band and chorus members.

To end the concert, the high school chorus performed four Christmas pieces. During one of the selections, solo parts were highlighted, and three lovely singers filled the spots as soloists. Twayna Meyers, Allison Fidler, and Madison Trent were the soloist for “Baby Born in Bethlehem.”

“I think the concert turned out great. The winter concert is always enjoyable and fun. I love being able sing for people alongside all of my favorite people,” stated Mollie Weis

Talented musicians and singers filled the cafetorium with magnificent music at the 2016 Winter Concert. Many gifted students were able to share their special talents through a night dedicated to music. They were all able to create beautiful tones that were sure to be enjoyed by friends, and family that listened.
