HACKERS SCRAMBLE TO SAVE CLIMATE DATA

Sources close to the Trump transition team report that the president plans to wipe the internet of most environmental data gathered by the Environmental Protection Agency and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration during the Obama administration. In response, scores of computer programmers, scientists and librarians have begun working overtime to gather and archive this information, which includes data on climate change and environmental threats like greenhouse gases and hazardous material spills. Scott Pruitt, Trump’s nominee to lead the EPA, is a climate-change skeptic, who before his nomination, took repeated legal actions against the EPA to thwart its regulations. Those involved with the data rescue plan to store all information at public information portals such as the Internet Archive and DataRefuge.org.

AMAZON’S LATEST DASH BUTTON SENDS A RANDOM BOX OF CANDY

Amazon’s Dash buttons are small devices to place around the house and click to automatically order replacement living supplies—for example, a Tide button next to your washing machine to order more detergent, a Glad button next to the waste can to order more trash bags. Amazon’s newest Dash button deals in what is arguably an equally important living supply—artisanal candy. The company’s Prime Surprise Sweets program delivers its participants small-batch snacks, some not even yet available in their own marketplace, complete with profile materials detailing the story of each artisan and their individual creations. The program is still in invite-only mode, though Amazon confirms all invite requests will be honored within a few weeks.

CUSTOM IPHONE 7 WALLPAPERS

The iPhone 7 is one of Apple’s most advanced devices yet and arguably one of the most unique mobile products on the market. For the countless Apple devotees that renewed their mobile contracts early just to secure one, the sleek aesthetics of the 7 necessitate some equally sharp accessories—a top-quality set of earbuds, a compact-yet-mighty case, a wide range of apps both useful and nonsensical, and perhaps of highest importance (given that you stare at it all day), the perfect wallpaper image. You could use a picture of your dog, the stock outer space image Apple supplies, or any other random internet image, but to prevent risk of lameness, the kind folks at PopSugar have commissioned a series of original art pieces set to the dimensions of both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. All images are both exclusive and free.

EMAIL SCAMS...BEWARE!

Email scams, phishing, hacking, identity thefts, cookie captures—online scams are everywhere, and even for the most experienced internet users, they are getting harder and harder to recognize. One of the net’s newest and trickiest phishing scams involves an email from Netflix asking users to update their membership information, which when clicked, opens a scam page that perfectly replicates the actual Netflix site. Should users then submit their login info (which they certainly shouldn’t), they are guided to additional “Netflix” pages asking for addresses, credit card information and a social security number. As word of the scam has spread, Netflix has confirmed that they have nothing to do with the emails and suggested all recipients ignore and promptly delete the mailings.

NO MORE CGI FOR PRINCESS LEIA

After internet rumors suggested the late Carrie Fisher would be appear in forthcoming Star Wars movies via CGI technology, Disney and Lucasfilm have publically announced that her Princess Leia character will not appear in any future productions. The official statement reads, “we don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but we want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.” Digital and hologram replication of deceased stars and musicians has become routine within big budget entertainment productions, especially on the concert festival circuit, where Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Elvis Presley and Ol’ Dirty Bastard have all performed as startlingly realistic holograms.
