THE MESENTERY: A NEW ORGAN

In the medical world, it is generally agreed that the human body contains 78 organs, though a group of scientists are suggesting the count be raised to 79. Their candidate is the mesentery, a strap of internal tissue that holds our intestines in place. Anatomists have long known about the mesentery, though it has never been considered an actual organ, namely because organs are singular in form, whereas the mesentery appears to be multiple segments of tissue. However, after four years of mesentery studies led by colorectal surgeon J. Calvin Coffey, it has been concluded that the mesentery is indeed an organ. While there is no way to officially declare it an organ, legendary medical textbook Gray’s Anatomy has been updated to include the new definition of the mesentery.

ALL OF YOUR DATA IN A FLASH

Traditionally, flash drives are thought of as an easy way to transport small data, but never as a true substitute for external hard drives or high-capacity cloud storage. That classification now stands to change, as tech manufacturers Kingston Digital have unveiled the DataTraveler Ultimate Generation, the world’s largest USB flash drive, available in both 1TB and 2TB models. Though the drive itself is physically larger than most flash drives, it is still remarkably smaller than any other drive of comparable capacity. The “GT” drive, which utilizes a USB 3.1 Type-A port, comes with a 5-year warranty and free tech support, and is available this February. Final pricing has not yet been announced, but speculated costs are $425 for 1TB, and $850 for 2TB.

NEONODE AIRBAR: ADD A TOUCH SCREEN TO YOUR COMPUTER

Computer accessory brand Neonode has unveiled the AirBar, a groundbreaking peripheral device that adds touchscreen capabilities to any standard laptop or computer monitor. A recipient of the Innovations Award for CES 2017, the AirBar is currently the only product of its kind, and at $69, costs significantly less than a new, touch-screen capable monitor. The device’s operative technology uses an infrared light to detect where your finger (or brush, stylus, pointer, etc.) touches the monitor, and moves the cursor accordingly. Though AirBars work with both PCs and Macs, they do require at least 17mm of free space below the display, making them currently incompatible with MacBook Pro laptops. Airbars come in three sizes: 15.6”, 14” and 13.3”, each built for 16:9 ratio displays.

POSTER THIN TV

Tech and appliance giant LG is set to release the world’s thinnest high-res, flat-screen TV, the W7 OLED. The groundbreaking device, which features a screen barely thicker than a door key, is available in both 65” and 77” models, and is light enough that it requires no wall studs to mount. While ultrathin LCD televisions traditionally offer lesser resolution than standard-size devices, the W7 utilizes an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode), a phone and laptop display technology that only LG has adapted for large-screen usage. The W7 features 4K resolution, supports Dolby Vision, HLG, HDR10 and Technicolor HDR technologies, and comes with a Dolby Atmos sound bar.
