Expanding an Adaptation the RIGHT Way? Good Omens Season 2:

On June 29th of this year, the official Good Omens Twitter account announced that the hit Prime Video series would be getting a second season, after its original release in 2019. The series is based on the 1990’s novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. I strongly believe that one of the main reasons why the show was such a success is because, even though Pratchett sadly passed away in 2015, Gaiman worked very closely with the show’s creative team to make sure his vision of the characters, even if slightly different, still remained relevant in relation to the original. Even though the characters and story might’ve been tweaked here and there, Gaiman was the one writing the majority of these changes.

An issue that happens with a lot of TV shows and movies that are based on books is that even if the novel is already finished, the studio will want to make a sequel anyway because it’ll make them more money. Chances are, however, that Good Omens’ second season will not fall into this category. While never finished, Gaiman and Pratchett actually started planning out and writing a second book, and many of its ideas were incorporated into the first season. Gaiman stated that he still has ideas to expand the universe, and since he is one of the original creators, one would hope he will know where to take the story to prevent it from getting derailed (like so many of these multi-season series do).

From what we’ve gathered so far, the story will be a mystery about an angel who somehow ended up on Earth and has amnesia. The first season’s iconic main characters, the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale, will also be a part of the story. The 6-episode season is likely to come out in 2022, and with Gaiman’s clear involvement in the process, there are high hopes for where the characters’ adventures will go.
