People that changed History

By Madison Trent

Francis Scott Key

In the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key witnessed the event of seeing the U.S. flag after the British attacked Fort Mchenry, but could not destroy it. The writing of “Defence of Fort M’Henry” was based on these events. The words later became our countries national anthem, renamed “The Star Spangled Banner.” He contributed greatly to our country and he can always be remembered. His works gave our county something to live by and the citizens new kind of hope.

James Madison

James Madison was known as “The Father of the Constitution,” mostly because he wrote and influenced most of the Constitution. He believed the U.S. should have a strong government and that power should be divided equally among the three branches. He helped to lead our government and give it a new structure. Because of James Madison and many others we still have our Constitution today and for many years to come. The U.S. can be proud to have such a great leader contribute to our countries main foundation and he can be remembered for that.

Mary  Lyon

Mary Lyon established the first college for women in 1837. She wanted women to have a higher education and she worked hard to achieve her goal. She was able to give women the hope to be known for something more. Today women are able to go to school, college, and are able to have good jobs. She contributed to making the U.S. truly free to not just men, but women as well.

Mary Kies

In 1809, Mary Dixon Kies was awarded the first U.S. patent given to a woman. She invented a new way of weaving straw with silk or thread. She was praised by Dolley Madison for her great achievement and for boosting the nation’s hat industry. Mary Kies contributed by showing other women that they can do things too. I imagine she was a great role model for many young women. It may not be the most obvious contribution to U.S. history, but she certainly has impacted the women of the nation.

William Clark

William Clark was invited by Meriwether Lewis to explore the lands west of the Mississippi River. Clark helped to make the maps and choose which paths to take. Clark helped to start the beginning of the United States. Without both of these men, finding out what lay west of the Mississippi might still be a mission. Clark and Lewis could be known as heroes for their great bravery and excellent map skills. Clark is known by many and is considered “one of the country’s greatest explorers.”
