After a very long 2020 full of ups, downs, lefts, rights, album releases, and even postponed album releases, it’s only fair that 2021 should start out a competitive year in the music industry. Between all of the streaming services that our little cell phones have to offer, the stakes are high, and underdogs have emerged, even in the early days of 2021.
We ended the year on a high note in music with the release of Taylor Swift’s evermore, the sister album to August’s release folklore Both albums tied Apple Music’s Top Albums list at number one, but it's really no surprise that Swift has broken yet another record. Although, she has some growing competition.
The number one song on the Billboard charts right now is the TikTok trend theme song “driver’s license” by Disney actress Olivia Rodrigo. Fans are calling her the alleged “love- child” of Taylor Swift and Lorde. Although its relatable lyrics and catchy melody are bound to make the song appear in your head once in a while, Rodrigo may be a one-hit-wonder, with no album or EP in sight as of right now.
Coming up behind her in the number two spot on the Billboard chart is Ariana Grande & Megan Thee Stallion with “34+ 35” The raunchy lyrics and bubble pop beat is another TikTok hit in addition to the ever-changing remixes released by fans and DJ’s around the world. Following Ms. Grande is 24kGoldn, previously at number two on the charts with “Mood” and the Weeknd with “Blinding Lights” spending its 59th week on the Billboard chart. At number five we are back at “Positions” by Ariana Grande which occupied the number three spot on the chart last week.
In the coming weeks we should see “Levitating” by Dua Lipa and DaBaby enter the top five as its streams have stayed consistent. Songs that continue to increase on the charts are “For the Night” by Pop Smoke featuring DaBaby and Lil Baby, “I Hope” by Gabby Barrett featuring Charlie Puth, and “Therefore I Am” by Billie Eilish.
