What Do You Want to be When You Grow up?

I’m sure we’ve all been asked this question a million times; “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The answers when we were younger were things like: princess, superhero, etc. However, we’re older now, and though we’ve been asked this frequently they want a serious answer.

To me, it seems we are rushed into deciding what we want to do for the rest of our lives. As if our decision now will tell if we fail or succeed in life. However, I’m here to say that’s not the case.

Life is a time of opportunities. You shouldn’t be forced to decide on one thing for your future, especially at a young age. Those young years should be a time to try something and try again if it doesn’t work. To be able to allow yourself to make mistakes and try different paths along the way. Forcing someone to be in a mindset that they need a “plan” is really unhealthy.

While having a plan for your life can be a great thing, and may help you get to your goals faster, you shouldn’t be forced to make a decision before you’re ready. I believe that making a plan should consist of going out and doing new things, having fun, and really finding who you are.

If you can take the time to really find yourself and find what you enjoy without being rushed, then your “plan” for life will run a lot smoother. So while you have people that are rushing you and putting a lot of pressure on you just remember; you have time.

Your path doesn’t have to be the same or on the same timescale as other people. Make your own life journey and find your own version of happiness. That way looking back, you can be happy with what you’ve done.
