The Dangers of Social Media Today

             Throughout the history of schools, one major issue has always been the cause of concern for most students and adults:  bullying. However, in modern society bullying is not as it was before. Today, we have social media, video games, and many more ways of bullying than we once had. In this time in history, we face a new form of bullying called cyberbullying.

What is cyberbullying?

            Today, cell phones and the internet are very prominent in society. With these new kinds of technologies, bullying has carried on these devices to create Cyberbullying. This new form of bullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can also include sharing personal or private information about someone to cause the person to be embarrassed or humiliated.

What kinds of places does this take place on?

             Cyberbullying takes place on any form of social media or games where you can talk to other people. Places such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Text message are common places for this to occur.

How often does cyberbullying take place?

             Cyberbullying is becoming a common form of bullying in today’s society. 9% of students in grades 6–12 experienced cyberbullying. 15% of those students were high school students who were electronically bullied in the past year. In addition, 55.2% of those students were LGBTQ students who experienced cyberbullying.

 Is it possible to prevent this?

             In order to prevent this from happening to you never share your passwords, private photos, or personal information to anyone. You should also remember to think before you post anything.

What do you do if you are being cyberbullied or you know someone who is?

             If you are someone you know if being cyberbullied report it to the site or to an adult that you trust. Make sure you talk to someone to get some help or else it might only continue to get worse.

 

                With everything going on in society today, cyberbullying is becoming a more popular way of bullying others. If you are being cyberbullied or know someone who is, speak up and get help.
