Athlete Spotlight: Gretchen Olsen

The Saxon girls basketball team has had a complete rebuild of their team ever since talents such as Katie McWilliams ‘15 and Evina Westbrook ‘17 graduated and went on to play Division One basketball. Now, a new wave of talent has come, including guard Gretchen Olsen ‘20, a shooter that has started for the Saxons and quickly became one of the most successful players on the team. Last year she scored 7.1 points, 3 rebounds, 1.2 assist, and also got a steal per game on a roster full of seniors. Now in her junior year, she is looking to make a big impact as a player and as a leader.

I am trying to become a more vocal leader this season as well as elevate my offensive and defensive game, I want to take more shots and be more aggressive on both sides of the ball.”
Guard Gretchen Olsen

She immediately made an impact this season scoring 28 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in their season opener versus the South Eugene Axe 69-46 and 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals in their 55-41 win over the Glencoe Crimson Tide.

I need her to lead this team, she is stepping into the leadership position for the first time so she has to learn fast and be in communication with coaches and teams.”
Head Coach Adrian Lewis

Her leadership and good play this season have the girls basketball team at a 3-1 record prior to league play with a young team including only two seniors. So far this season, Olsen has been averaging 15.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. This young wing is hoping to make a big impact come league play where the Saxons will compete in the new MVC against their old opponents as well as their new opponents from Bend.
