Film Review: Halloween

The following article originally appeared in Juniata High School's newspaper The Arrowhead

It has been 40 years since the notorious killer Michael Myers first attacked Laurie Strode and now he has escaped again, with plans to finish what he started in 1978. David Gordon Green directed this long anticipated sequel of Halloween, with Jamie Lee Curtis returning to play Laurie Strode. Laurie’s daughter, Karen, and her granddaughter, Allyson, are played by Julie Greer and Andi Matichak. Halloween got a 7.4 rating on IMDb and 79% in rotten tomatoes. Being a horror/slasher movie, there was much more humor than I anticipated or wanted from this particular franchise. It was still an extremely enjoyable movie to watch, I just believe the humor took away from the horror. I also noticed that Michael Myers has gotten much more brutal in his old age. There is a lot of blood and gore in this movie, so as a disclaimer, if you do not like blood or gore, you probably will not like this movie. Halloween is not going to be for everyone, but if you like horror with a dash of humor, I highly recommend this movie.

There are many interesting elements in this sequel that I did not expect. It was a satisfying continuation of the original but one question still stands in my mind: is Michael Myers finally dead, or is there another sequel in our future? For those of you who have never watched a Halloween movie, a recurring theme in every movie is that Michael Myers escapes, he goes on a killing spree, and then he suffers some sort of grave injury, such as being hit by a car or shot in the head, and everyone thinks he is dead. However, without fail, he never is. I can’t help but wonder if this will be the case again, or if Michael Myers’s reign of terror has finally reached its end.
