A Light Called Steve

A beautiful new Aurora* that was discovered by citizen scientists and verified by the European Space Agency's (ESA) Swarm satellites has been christened "Steve."

*An Aurora is a light that appears in the sky which is generated when charged particles ejected from the sun are drawn to Earth's north and south poles by the planet's magnetic field.

Through the Rings of Saturn 

The Cassini spacecraft is about to begin its dissent into destruction. NASA's Cassini spacecraft has had its last go round with Saturn's moon Titan and is now beginning its final set of 22 orbits around the ringed planet.

"With this flyby we're committed to the Grand Finale," said Earl Maize, Cassini project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "The spacecraft is now on a ballistic path, so that even if we were to forgo future small course adjustments using thrusters, we would still enter Saturn's atmosphere on Sept. 15 no matter what."

Cars That Fly 

The stuff in science fiction movies is close to being a reality. Kitty Hawk, a Silicon Valley company backed by Google Founder Larry Page, began testing a prototype flying car. They company hopes to have an initial operational test flight before the end of the year.

Ingenuity and scientific advancement may soon provide us with roads that go the distance in solving the planet's plastic waste problems. The PlasticRoad concept consists of prefabricated, modular and hollow road structures made from recycled plastic.
