MCDONALD’S MCTRAX: PLAY THE PLACEMAT

 Though a Big Mac and large fries still aren’t exactly good for you (a grand total of over 1,075 calories, 57g fat and 1,400 mg sodium), McDonald’s incredible new beat machine placemat is a perfectly healthy way to fuel your inner musician. Using only conductive ink and a tiny circuit board, digital agency This Page Amsterdam has turned a 0.05 mm thick McDonald’s placement into a revolutionary keyboard device. Co-developer Radha Pleijsant explains, “the paper of the placemat is what makes this technique so innovative—the phone merely acts as the speaker and screen, which is easily connected to the placemat via Bluetooth, making sure you can hear the music on your speakers.” To start your session, simply install the McTrax app, place your phone in the middle of your tray, and strike the pads and buttons printed on the placement as you would a standard drum machine or keyboard. And, bonus—you can even record your voice! No announcement has been made yet regarding global release of McTrax, though with a technology this simple and portable, it’s bound to reach America soon.

PIZZA HUT DJ BOX: CHOMP UP THE JAMS

Pizza Hut is widely known for having some of the cheesiest, most saturated pies in the business, a characteristic that requires some high-quality pizza boxes. But while a thick, sturdy box is one definition of high-quality, a piece of cardboard that somehow functions as a classic, two-turntables-and-a-mixer DJ setup? That’s a different type of high quality! Somehow, for some odd reason, Pizza Hut and printed electronics firm Novalia have created a battery-powered cardboard box that functions as a full DJ setup. The box connects via computer or smartphone to DJ software like Serato, and provides users with function controls such as play, cue, sync, volume and pitch manipulation. And to top it all off, users can do more than simply shuffle through tracks—the dual-deck design lets you combine and mix songs, as well as perform turntablist effects and tricks with the main fader.
